Sagar Sen

Sagar Sen was an Indian singer who primarily worked in the Bengali music industry. He was known for singing Rabindra Sangeet and Bengali modern songs. Some of his popular songs are “Ki Holo Chand Keno Meghe Dheke Gelo” (1955), “Trishito Nayane Eso” (1987), and “Ei Jiban Emni Kore” (1989).

Sagar Sen was born on Sunday, 15 May 1932, (aged 50 years, at the time of death) in Faridpur district, Bengal Presidency, British India (now Dhaka, Bangladesh). He completed his schooling at Tirthapati Institution, Kolkata, West Bengal. He completed his graduation from Surendranath College, Kolkata.

Sagar Sen belonged to a Zamindar family of Rajbari in Bangladesh.

He married Sumita Sen in 1962. They have three sons named Pritam Sen, Priyom Sen and Pramit Sen. Pramit Sen continued his father’s legacy by singing Rabindra Sangeet.

Musical Career

Singer

Radio

In 1958, Sagar Sen started broadcasting songs for All India Radio (AIR), Akashvani, Kolkata.

Album

In 1961, he recorded his first album songs titled “Nupur Beje Jay Rini” and “Ogo Jaler Rani” under the Megaphone Records label. Some of his other albums recorded in 1964 are “Apnake Ei Jana Amar,” “Keno Amay Pagol Kore Jas,” “Oei Malatilata Doley,” and “Aamar Nayan Tabo Nayaner” under the Columbia record label.

Film

Sagar Sen started his playback singing career with the film Je Jekhane Danriye (1974).

Some of the other films in which he has lent his voice as a playback singer are Mantramugdha (1977) and Parichay (1978).

Stage Shows

He has organised various stage shows in Kolkata such as Shrabon Sandhya (Monsoon Evening), Bishwajana Mohichhey (World Spellbound in Music), Gaaner Jharnatalaye (Under the Cascade of Songs), and Rituranga ( Season Varieties).

  • Sagar Sen received the BFJA Award for the song “Aaj Jyotsnaratey Shobai Gechhey Boney” in the film Parichay (1978)

Death

He was diagnosed with cancer in 1981. Thereafter on 4 January 1983, he died.

  • Sagar Sen founded a Tagorean music academy known as Rabi Rashmi in 1962.
  • He has contributed a large amount of his earnings to charity and the West Bengal Chief Minister’s relief fund for social causes such as the flood in Bengal during the 70’s that affected millions of lives.
  • In 2020, Sagar Sen’s son Pritam Sen created a non-commercial app titled ‘Sagarsen| Timeless Legend’, where he generated a digital copy of his father by providing the videos and archive of all his work. The app allows Sagar Sen’s fans across the globe to interact with him.
  • His favourite dish was Chingri fish curry.
  • He liked making idols of Goddess Durga with soil.
