Jisshu Sengupta is an Indian actor, producer, and television presenter, who primarily appears in Bengali films. He has also worked in Hindi, Telegu, and Tamil films. He is well known for his work in Jaatishwar (2014), Kelor Kirti (2016), Posto (2017), Ek Je Chhilo Raja (2018), and Mahalaya (2019).

Television

Jisshu Sengupta made his debut with the teleserial Mahaprabhu (1998) on Doordarshan. He played the character of young “Chaitanya Mahaprabhu” in the serial.

After a 13-year-long gap in television, he produced the TV series Aparajito (2011-2012) on Star Jalsha and played the character of a single father. He has also hosted award ceremonies and TV shows like the Bengali version of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (2013), Egiye Bangla (2015) Filmfare Awards East (2017), and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa – Gaane Gaane Tomar Mone (2012-2019). He got the opportunity to judge a reality show Dance Bangla Dance Junior (2018) on Zee Bangla. In 2020, he hosted Super Singer, Super Singer Junior, and Hashiwala & Company on Star Jalsha.

Jisshu Sengupta made his debut on the silver screen with the film Priyojon (1999), directed by Dinen Sengupta. The film was a commercial and critical failure.

He then went on to act in Chhelebela (2002), where he played the character of young Rabindranath Tagore. Thereafter, he appeared in several unsuccessful films in which he was cast as the main lead. He appeared in a Bangladeshi film titled Moner Majhe Tumi (2003) as a lead, which became the highest-grossing film of 2003. He has also played a supporting character in several films such as Kurukshetra (2002), Guru (2003), Premi (2004), Sangram (2005), Chore Chore Mastuto Bhai (2005), Abhimanyu (2006), and Janmadata (2008). All these films earned a very low degree of success. His career took a turn when he met the renowned filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh. It was Rituporno Ghosh who guided Jisshu Sengupta on how to choose roles and play characters. Jisshu appeared in several films by Ritoporno Sengupta such as The Last Lear (2007), Sob Charitro Kalponik (2009), and Abohomaan (2009). He also played an extended cameo in the film Noukadubi (2011). Jisshu Sengupta was critically acclaimed by The Times of India for playing the role of “Partho” in Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish (2012).

He has also been featured in some notable works of director Srijit Mukherjee namely Jaatishwar (2014), Rajkahini (2015), and Zulfiqar (2016). He has also been cast as Byomkesh Bakshi, the famous fictional character written by Saradindu Bandopadhyay, in the films Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana (2016) and Byomkesh O Agnibaan (2017). His commercially and critically successful film Posto (2017) directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee has been remade in Hindi as Shastry Virudh Shastry (2023). Some of his other successful films are Ek Je Chhilo Raja (2018), Uma (2018) and Dawshom Awbotaar (2023).

He made his debut in the Hindi film industry with Shyam Benegal’s biographical film Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2004). Jisshu Sengupta played the character of “Sisir Bose” in the film.

Jisshu Sengupta got to play a part in Anurag Basu’s Barfi (2012), which was his second Hindi language film. His other Hindi film projects were Piku (2015), Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi(2019), where he played the character of Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, the king of Jhansi, Mardaani 2 (2019), Sadak 2 (2020), Shakuntala Devi (2020), and Antim: The Final Truth (2021).
