Bidipta Chakraborty

Bidipta Chakraborty is an Indian actress mostly known for her theatre, films, and daily soaps in the Bengali language. She has acted in some popular long-running daily soaps such as Keya Patar Nouko (2011–2013), Ishti Kutum (2011–2015), and Jol Nupur (2013–2015). Some of her popular films include Chalo Let’s Go (2008), Nagarkirtan (2019), and Dracula Sir (2020). Since 2022, she has been part of a popular daily soap called ‘Mithai’ on Zee Bangla.

Bidipta Chakraborty got separated from her first husband when Meghla, her elder daughter was, 5 years old due to an unhappy marriage ((The Telegraph)). After separation, Bidipta Chakraborty married Birsa Dasgupta on 30 January 2010. Both of them were friends from childhood. He is an Indian film director who mostly makes films in Bengali. Bidipta also has a younger daughter named Idara Dasgupta.

Career

Theatres & Plays

Bidipta started acting on stage when she was 5 years old. The name of her first play is Bhalo Manusher Pala, a modern Bengali adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan, organised by Arun Mukhopadhyay from Chetana Theatre Group. According to Bidipta, she stopped acting for some time post her marriage in 2010. She further said that she resumed her acting career after drawing inspiration from her sister Sudipta. She went on to perform many plays with her. After that, she was part of many plays. One of the plays worth mentioning is ‘Brain’ (2012) written and directed by Debesh Chattopadhyay. It was an experimental play that was based on neuroscience.

Television

Bidipta Chakraborty made her debut in her first TV programme for Doordarshan under Sonex Production when she was still in school. The production company was created by Jochon Dastidar who wanted Bidipta’s father Biplab Chakraborty to bring her daughters for shooting when they didn’t go to school. She appeared in the Zee Bangla show Ei Ghor Ei Sangsar (2008-2010), where she played the character of “Kaberi’s aunt.” In the Star Jalsha show Ogo Bodhu Sundori (2009-2010), she played the character of “Ishaan’s mother.”

The show was also made in Hindi as ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ (2010). In the Zee Bangla show Keya Patar Nouko (2010-2013), she played the role of the mother of the lead actress’ character named Sona. She appeared in Ishti Kutum (2011-2015) as “Sanjhbati.” She has played various characters in TV serials which have been aired on Zee Bangla, Colors Bangla and Star Jalsha. In 2022 she landed the role of  “Anuradha Modak” in the TV serial ‘Mithai.’

Film

Bidipta Chakraborty appeared in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002), directed by Aparna Sen. This was her first Indian English-language film which premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland and was also screened at different film festivals.

In Rosogolla (2018), she played the protagonist Nobin Chandra Das’s mother’s role.
