Abir Chatterjee

Abir Chatterjee is an Indian actor who predominantly works in Bengali films. He began his acting career on television and later began working in films. He is well known for playing the famous detective character “Byomkesh Bakshi” in the film series of the same name.

He went to Laban Hrad Vidyapith for Boys A. D. School in Salt Lake, Kolkata, and studied there until class 10. For plus two he went to Jaipuria School, Kolkata. He graduated from Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration in Kolkata with a B.Com degree and completed his MBA degree from the ICFAI Business School in Kolkata. After he completed his MBA, he joined a share broking company, Indiabulls, as an assistant relationship manager. He used to balance his work and acting on television side by side. Television

Abir Chatterjee started his career in acting with TV serials. He appeared in serials like Ek Akasher Niche (2000-2005), Khunje Berai Kacher Manush (2007), Banhishikha (2010), and Proloy Asche (2011).

He was also chosen to host the Bengali TV reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa (2020) on Zee Bangla.

Film

Abir Chatterjee’s debut film was Robibar Bikelbela (2004), an independent period drama film. He played the character of Naxalite in the film. This film was directed by Amit Dutta. He was next seen in the romantic film Cross Connection (2009) as the main lead.

In 2010, he was cast as the famous Bengali detective character “Byomkesh Bakshi,” created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, in the film Byomkesh Bakshi, directed by Anjan Dutt. The film was adapted from the story ‘Adim Ripu’. The film was a hit at the box office and the Bengali audience liked Abir as “Byomkesh Bakshi.” He has appeared in several Byomkesh Bakshi films directed mostly by Anjan Dutt and Arindam Sil. The other films under the series Byomkesh Bakshi in which he appeared are Abar Byomkesh (2012), Byomkesh Phire Elo (2014), Har Har Byomkesh (2015), Byomkesh Pawrbo (2016), Byomkesh Gotro (2018), Biday Byomkesh (2018), and Byomkesh Hotyamancha (2022).

He was also cast as “Feluda,” another famous Bengali detective character, in the film Badshahi Angti (2014). The character was created by Satyajit Ray, the renowned filmmaker of Indian Cinema. He never played the character of “Feluda” again as the producers had issues with the image of the actor as he was already established as the face of Byomkesh Bakshi.

He was part of other blockbuster Bengali films such as Baishe Srabon (2011), Bojhena Shey Bojhena (2012), Kanamachi (2013), Jaatishwar (2014), and The Royal Bengal Tiger (2014). The film Royal Bengal Tiger (2014) was based on the famous novel ‘Fight Club’ (1996) written by Chuck Palahniuk. The film got a positive response from the audience and critics alike.

Apart from films, he has also appeared in TV commercials for Sunrise Shahi Garam Masala, Britannia NutriChoice Biscuits, Health OK and Chhaya Prakashani books.

Web Series

Abir Chatterjee was cast as Captain Pradeep Bhattacharya for the web series Avrodh: The Siege Within 2, which premiered on 24 June 2022 on SonyLIV. This is Abir’s first web series in the Hindi language. The series has received positive reviews from the audience and critics alike.

  • Abir has a mark on his right cheek. In an interview, he said that he got the mark when he was in class 7. It was a rainy day and he was cycling back home when a cat came across his way, to save the cat he lost control and slipped. The cycle’s handle hit his face and gave him a mark.
  • The first film Abir watched on screen was King Kong (1933). His father took him to watch English classic films at Talkie Show House in Kolkata. Some of the classics that he watched there were The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).
  • Abir Chatterjee topped the list of Kolkata Times 20 Most Desirable men in 2014.
  • Abir Chatterjee loves watching football. He supports team Argentina during the World Cup, and his favourite player is Messi and Maradona.
